After the recent incident of rioting in Baltimore, some residents in the Murfreesboro area may be concerned about possible unrest if an unruly demonstration were to break out in our city. Murfreesboro City Councilman Ron Washington suggested that he was not overly concerned due to the preparedness of Murfreesboro law enforcement.

Councilman Washington told WGNS in an email:

"I am confident that after discussions held last year and recently that our city leadership is prepared. As a matter of fact, City Manager Rob Lyons and I discussed our preparedness last night while viewing what's going on in Baltimore and nationwide especially since Murfreesboro has a university."

MTSU students gathered earlier this week to discuss the race issues in regards to the violence in Baltimore. About 100 students showed up and talked about the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who died after a sustaining a spinal injury while in police custody. The riots in Maryland started as a result of his death.

Gray was originally taken into police custody because he allegedly possessed a switchblade knife. Witnesses claim that police officers used unnecessary force against Gray during his arrest.
