Murfreesboro was in a much different place socially in the 1960's when compared to todays times. Current Murfreesboro Vice Mayor Madelyn Scales-Harris remembers when her father was elected as the first African American to the Murfreesboro City Council.
Her father, Robert W. Scales who went by the nickname of T-90, was the first African-American city councilman and first African-American Vice-Mayor of Murfreesboro.
Madelyn Scales-Harris was elected to the city council in 2010. In 2017, she was named the Vice Mayor of Murfreesboro.
