Board Unanimously Names Timothy Smith Executive Director of the Murfreesboro Center for the Arts

David LaRoche, president of the Center’s board, announced that after reviewing 82 applications, the Murfreesboro Center for the Arts board unanimously selects Timothy Smith as the new executive director.  He has served as interim director since former director Tony Cimino left on April 13th.

A South Carolina native, Smith moved to the Nashville area in 1983 to study church music at Trevecca University. He became active in local theater in 2008 with Murfreesboro Little Theater, and was hired as office manager of the Center for the Arts in October of 2010.  He has been music director or cast member in seven shows at the Center.   Credits this year include as Boolie in “Driving Miss Daisy” in February and as music director for “Hello Dolly” last month.

He said he was “extremely excited” about the success of sold-out Center productions the past few months. He’s also delighted with the preparations for “Alice in Wonderland, Jr”, which opens for three weekends Aug. 9,  as well as the remainder of the season.

Smith chaired a selection committee which recently made final proposals for the 2014 season.   It will be announced soon and will include a series of shows to be performed in the gallery.  “We’re excited about that,” he said, “and we’ll be reaching out to the community to bring in more people to participate at the center.”

In keeping with that goal, Smith said he wants to put “a little more emphasis on visual arts. I would like to introduce classes” in addition to coordinating the exhibits which are mounted monthly on gallery walls.

Among his first duties will be to complete a job description and employment announcement for the vacant office manager.  He hopes to be able to fill that post by the end of August.
