A fire hydrant purchased by neighbors helped Rutherford County Fire Rescue firefighters combat fire inside a detached garage Wednesday on Orchard Park Drive, said Fire Chief Larry Farley.

Firefighters responding from two stations found heavy brown smoke coming from the eves of the garage.

“The fire was at the point of flashover,” Chief Farley said. “But the firefighters made a quick entry and knocked the fire down.”

Firefighters were fortunate to connect to a hydrant that a few neighbors on Orchard Park purchased with their own money and had installed after fire destroyed a home on their street in February 2011.

Cause of the fire was believed electrical, Chief Farley said.

After controlling the fire, firefighters searched for hot spots. They found acetylene and oxygen tanks inside the garage and removed the tanks safely.

A 1993 Geo Tracker located inside the garage sustained heavy damage. Firefighters removed a garage door on the front and back of the garage to gain access to extinguish the hot spots and to remove the Tracker.
