Artists of Murfreesboro's St. Clair Senior Center
Since 1980, the St. Clair Street Senior Center has helped seniors live an active and independent lifestyle that includes immersion in the fine arts. Led by the center coordinator Brenda Elliott this year's exhibition features Karen Brackman, Viann Clements, Joyce Cummings, Peggy Davidson, Hilda Dorofee, Jack Freeman, Mady Mueller, Ellen 'Joyce' Pulse, Louise Tegarden, and Gladys Smith.
As an exhibit participant Viann Clements describes her approach to her work as, "Art is music for the eye as seen through the mind of the artist. I have studied under several professional artists and have taught art and find that its expression is ever changing."
Anderson Design Group's Spirit of Nashville Collection
Inspired by the Golden Age of Poster Art, Nashville's Anderson Design Group offers a number of poster prints that showcase Music City and its surrounding communities such as Murfreesboro to tourists, friends, and home-town memorabilia collectors. Each poster is hand-illustrated and hand-lettered. Having drawn critical acclaim and a number of design awards since first developed in 2003 a follow-up edition entitled the Spirit of Nashville Collection was created and today contains over 150 different designs.
Commenting, Anderson Design owner Joel Anderson stated, "...we still like to celebrate the beautiful and historic aspects of our home state in our poster art. Not long ago, we were contacted by Murfreesboro resident Andrea Loughry about the idea of creating a series of prints honoring Rutherford County. We had a meeting with several business owners, park officials, and leaders... We started the series with a Rutherford Courthouse design. After the first poster was finished, we began working on other Middle Tennessee and Rutherford County themes."
The Rotunda Gallery is located in Murfreesboro City Hall at 111 West Vine Street. Open Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., the exhibit closes only for weekends and observed holidays.
All exhibits and receptions are free to the public.
Artist Statements from Art Over Sixty
Karen Brackman
I renew my art skills annually at Plaza Art by taking lessons regularly in mixed mediums. I thoroughly enjoy teaching new mixed mediums at St. Clair Street Senior Center. If I can break down a painting to teach, it is very satisfying.
Viann Clements
Art is music for the eye as seen through the mind of the artist. I have studied under several professional artists and have taught art and find that its expression is ever changing.
Joyce Cummings
My goal as an artist is to create an image that is pleasing, memorable and endearing to the viewer.
Peggy Davidson
I Love birds and try to respect their natural beauty
Hilda Dorofee
I love to paint. It gives me a great deal of pleasure. I began 45 years ago in Pennsylvania. I'm always trying new things. I love to do pen & ink also.
Jack Freeman
I began a great love of art in the seventh grade and continues till today. I have gone to art school in Michigan. But, most importantly- I give all the praise to God, our Father, not me when I create art work.
Mady Mueller
My paintings are my refuge; my way of relaxing and regaining my spiritual health.
Ellen 'Joyce' Pulse
I try to see the beauty that God created in everything I see. I have had the good fortune to visit Europe and the Far East. I visited many art galleries seeing Michael Angelo's Sistine Chapel, statue of David and visited the home of one of my favorite artist, Monet outside of Paris. His gardens were truly an inspiration for some of his most famous paintings. The various galleries I've visited inspired me to learn how to paint and enjoy it tremendously.
Louise Tegarden
I love the reality of nature....Birds, rocks, mountains, trees etc.
Gladys Smith
