Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland discusses:

  1. City Council will meet this week and Murfreesboro's stand on fireworks will be discussed. The "on air" pole from listeners showed 57% against fireworks (ban them from the city) and 43% for allowing the use of fireworks in Murfreesboro. Mayor McFarland said that all of the Tennessee cities with a similar or larger population of Murfreesboro do not allow fireworks.
  2. Bridge Over Broad with this project soon to include the "off" and "on" ramps. They will be used and the center lanes of Memorial/Old Fort Parkway will be closed so the bridge can be built. By the way, we learned the proper term for this structure is "urban interchange", not "Bridge Over Broad".
  3. Probation: people just released from jail are trying to get jobs and must quickly start paying fees.
  4. Panhandlers: if you can hold a sign all day, you should be able to get a job.
  5. Haynes Drive: traffic has grown dramatically and listeners asked if there are plans to widen the road? Mayor McFarland indicated that something similar to Sulphur Springs Road, between Haynes and Northfield, was being considered. That's a center turn lane with left and right lanes of traffic (3-lane roadway), along with sidewalks and underground storm water system. The mayor also noted that the intersection of Sulphur Springs and Haynes was very dangerous, and traffic engineers are considering a traffic signal.
  6. Sale of Murfreesboro Electric to MTEMC is still in the "study stages". There is no time frame, and the city has still not found consultants with the proper credentials to give an estimated value to MED.
