Jail in Need of Repair

You see it from a distance and you would never now about the problems that lie inside and out. The Rutherford County Adult Detention Center is in need of repair and costly ones at that. The county is in the process of fixing deteriorating brick on the outside of the building and an aging kitchen on the inside of the jail. The county commission recently approved the spending of $30-thousand dollars on the kitchen that will get it up to par so that it can pass state inspection. The county is also seeking bids on repairing the outside of the jail, a project that will cost about $300-thousand dollars. Truthfully though, the entire jail is in need of renovation work and the kitchen is in need of being expanded. That project would cost taxpayers $1.2-million dollars. That has not been approved by county commissioners. Only one of two watch towers is currently operational too, according to a recent state inspection. The jail is in need of funding to make the second watchtower operational, but funding for that may not come until the 2012 year.
