Another scam where a caller claims to be with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office has been reported in Murfreesboro.
The victim told police that they received a phone call from a man claiming to be "Sgt. Kent Sellers with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office." The caller informed the 74 year old victim that he had two warrants for his arrest. According to a police report filed by the victim, the fictitious warrants were for "Avoiding Civic Duty" and "Failure to appear in court."
The caller told the victim that he needed to pay $900 to avoid an arrest. Luckily, the caller refused to pay the money and instead went directly to police.
The incident was a scam as the Sheriff's Office does not call those wanted on warrants and does not demand money over the phone.
