Saint Thomas Rutherford is addressing a pregnancy statistic that no one likes to talk about...
With the stream of beautifully photographed babies we see daily in our social media newsfeeds, it can sometime seem like healthy, happy newborns are everywhere. For those of us who haven't been affected first-hand, it's easy to forget the sobering statistic that 1 in 4 U.S. women will lose a baby to miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death.
October is National Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month. In recognition of the many parents who are grieving the family they dreamed of, Ascension Saint Thomas writes with the following guidance for those supporting a loved one in the aftermath of loss.
If you're struggling to find the right words to show your support, consider the suggestions offered by Star Legacy Foundation.
• This online Pregnancy and Infant Loss Directory provides a streamlined list of resources across the U.S.
• Encourage the grieving parent to talk to his or her physician or a therapist about any prolonged feelings of hopelessness or depression.
• If the parent in question has other children, offer a day or evening of free babysitting.
• On October 15, special candlelight ceremonies will take place in locations around the world to honor lost babies. Click here to learn how you can participate in the International Wave of Light.
