Things looked different this year at Tennessee State FFA Convention - which is traditionally held in Gatlinburg. There may not have been a sea of thousands of blue and gold FFA jackets, but the celebration went on just the same with the first ever Virtual State FFA Convention. This inaugural event was one for the books for the Stewarts Creek High School FFA chapter.
This year marks 50 years of women in FFA, and Stewarts Creek is proud to have well-qualified women leading the chapter. Micayla Hickman, the immediate past FFA President of Stewarts Creek, was elected to serve Tennessee FFA as the State Treasurer -- a first in school history. "I wouldn't have been able to reach this goal without the support of my teachers and advisors at Stewarts Creek. I'm excited, grateful, and looking forward to my year of service with the Tennessee FFA Association" says Micayla.
Micayla was also named the 2020 Tennessee State Star in Agriscience. The star awards are prestigious among FFA members, as the programs encompass our agricultural roots. Micayla was recognized for her work in her Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) Program, where she has developed eight research projects over the last four years. She has studied a wide range of subjects including social science, animal science, and food product systems. Micayla will receive $2,250 for this honor and will be attending the virtual State Star Tour, sponsored by the Tennessee FFA Foundation.
Ella Hasty was recognized as the 2020 Middle Tennessee Star Greenhand. She was awarded for her work in her Beef Production SAE at Wrather
The highest degree at the state level is the Tennessee State FFA Degree. This year, five members of the SCHS FFA Chapter were awarded this honor for their commitment to their FFA chapters and the development of their SAE programs. These members are Macy Browning, Grace Hardee, Micayla Hickman, Taylor Newbern, and Samantha Walter. All five of these women are recent graduates from SCHS. Micayla Hickman was also recognized as the Henry G. Williams Memorial Scholarship recipient. To top it all off, Wyatt Blanks represented the chapter as a recorded talent act at the virtual convention, where he played electric guitar.
Stewarts Creek FFA was chartered in 2013 when the high school opened in Rutherford County. The chapter is led by FFA advisors Amy Olt and Gina Stewart.
