MURFREESBORO, Tenn - If you are looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity, please consider being an ESL (English Second Language) teacher or one-on-one tutor for adult learners living or working in Rutherford County. Read To Succeed (RTS), a local non-profit that provides free adult literacy programs, is in need of volunteers to teach weekly online ESL classes for the upcoming Fall 2020 semester. Currently, RTS has learners representing more than 48 different countries that attend weekly ESL classes. To be an ESL volunteer teacher, you are not required to know any other languages and/or have previous teaching experience. In addition, Read To Succeed offers a comprehensive, condensed two-part online training course that will provide you with the necessary tools needed to teach an online ESL class.

Benefits to Learners

Volunteering as an ESL teacher, teaching English to underserved communities, can provide several learner benefits including increasing educational, as well as employment prospects for individuals who may not have had the opportunity to learn English. Moreover, language barriers can make it especially challenging for learners to compete for sought-after job opportunities. Since these communities are often low-income, many individuals cannot afford formal English lessons. We are proud to offer English lessons at no cost to our learners.

About ESL Instruction

Read To Succeed provides ESL instruction for adults seeking to improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Registration is open to new students in August. Online classes for the Fall semester will run from late August until mid-December. Using a digital, educational platform provided by RTS, volunteer teachers are able to conduct ESL classes virtually, meeting twice a week.

About Adult Literacy Tutoring

In addition to ESL instruction, RTS offers one-on-one Adult Literacy tutoring for individuals who are 18 years and older. For this type of instruction, tutors are paired with learners who have specific needs, such as reading, math, etc. Instruction is conducted virtually or at a mutually agreed upon public place.
