-(MURFREESBORO) Last week's OPERATION LOOKOUT was a big success. Rutherford County Traffic Safety Task Force officers teamed-up to concentrate on enforcing the speed limit, distracted driving and seat belt safety last week (1/22/2021).

Task force officers from Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD), Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol spread out and patroled designated areas throughout the city and county from 8:00 that morning until noon.

They will concentrate on traffic safety from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Medical Center Parkway at the corner of Memorial Boulevard in Murfreesboro.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Lt. Jon Officer reports that 64 drivers were cited for texting while driving and 40 motorists were cited for not wearing a seat belt.

Murfreesboro Police Capt. Cary Gensemer noted, "The Rutherford County Traffic Safety Task Force sponsored the enforcement event to bring awareness to drivers who are distracted and not wearing seat belts."

Murfreesboro Police Sgt. Greg Walker said a vast majority of crashes over the past six weeks have been rear-end collisions because drivers are distracted and following too closely.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Sgt. Shawn Boyd said officers issued 27 moving violations including speeding and DUI and non-moving violations such as texting and driving.

“This was a great combined enforcement effort,” Boyd said. “I might add not everyone was upset with us during the operation. Two kids brought doughnuts for everyone.”
