(MURFREESBORO)  Do you know what MEMORIAL DAY commemorates? Surprisingly, when WGNS randomly asked citizens of all ages that question, the majority thought it was a holiday that celebrates the beginning of summer.

Now--the rest of the story: MEMORIAL DAY is a federal holiday in the United States where we honor those who have made the supreme sacrifice in service to our country.

As of 1970 the commemoration was changed by Congress to be on the last Monday in May. Prior to 1970, it was known as Decoration Day and celebrated on May 30th from 1868 to 1970.

Col. Hardy Murfree DAR Chapter

Chapter Regent Lila Beasley said that the Colonel Hardy Murfree Chapter has and will honor our military in four ways.
1.  This past Saturday, May 14, we held a Revolutionary Patriot Grave Marking for Pvt David Osteen. One segment of this ceremony honored all Veterans for the past 250 years of our country’s heritage. This event was held in conjunction with Sons of the American Revolution.
2.  At our regular May meeting we held a memorial service for our daughters deceased during the past year and for all soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
3. We have been privileged to purchase a Gold Star Marker to be placed on the historic courthouse lawn. The actual dedication will be held later this summer. This marker pays tribute to the families of those killed in action or as a result of active service.
4.  All Chapter Members are encouraged to fly their flags at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day and at full staff from noon until sundown. This pays tribute to both those fallen and the veterans now living.

Again, remember--the purpose of Memorial Day is to honor America's fallen warriors!
