(MURFREESBORO) The Senior Citizens Awareness Network (SCAN) at the Rutherford County Sheriffs Office is working to help senior citizens celebrate Christmas. In fact, SCAN volunteers work throughout the year to help seniors who may live alone and need help.

SCAN Coordinator E.T. Guice said, "Christmas can be a lonely time for senior citizens, especially if they do not have family members to help them celebrate. That’s why the Sheriff’s Senior Citizens Awareness Network volunteers ask community residents to buy Christmas gifts for about 80 senior citizens, many of whom live alone"

Volunteer Phil Barnett noted, “It makes them feel worthwhile when they receive presents. It makes them feel like somebody cares.”

He concluded, "We may be the only ones they have."

People who wish to buy presents for a senior may select their name from the Christmas tree in the Sheriff’s Office lobby at 940 New Salem Highway in Murfreesboro.

Guice suggested the seniors need personal items such as toiletries, pajamas, medium sized slippers for the women and large slippers for men, socks, footies, robes, linens, blankets and snacks such as cookies and crackers.

Gifts should be brought to the Sheriff’s Office lobby by Monday, Dec. 19, 2022. The gifts will be delivered to the senior citizens before Christmas.
