A local church is on a mission to help local families in need. According to a press release WGNS received, Powell’s Chapel Baptist Church will hold a food giveaway for any families in the Murfreesboro community in need on Saturday, March 30 from 1:30 to 3 pm.
A church volunteer told us that food will be distributed to each family on a first come, first serve basis until all is given away on Saturday. “The bags are intended to feed a family of four for one week,” said Emma Hawkins, age 12. “Our Sunday School class wanted to do something for our community and this was a great idea from our teacher, Amanda Roshon.” The fourth through sixth grade Sunday School class led this church-wide effort to feed hungry families in the Murfreesboro area. The church responded by generously giving donations of food to fill bags for those who might otherwise go hungry.
Feeding America.org reports that in 2011, 5.1 percent of all U.S. households accessed emergency food from a food pantry one or more times. The same group says that the food insecurity rate in Rutherford County is 13.8%. Food insecurity refers to the lack of access to enough food for a healthy family. The organization has reported, “food insecurity may reflect a household’s need to make trade-offs between important needs, such as housing or medical bills, and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods.” For some reason, the food insecurity rate is even higher for children in Rutherford County. That number rings in at 20.6%.
“Families are encouraged to just drive up to the church and receive a bag of food, no strings attached,” said Sunday School teacher Amanda Roshon. “We just want to serve the Lord and help our neighbors.”
The press release also stated, “Families are also invited to attend the community-wide Easter Egg Hunt on the same day (March 30th) from 12 pm to 2 pm. Activities and snacks for the children will be provided along with age level egg hunts.”
