Murfreesboro, TN - As the educational landscape continues to evolve, one thing remains constant: the hunger for learning among today's school students. Heather Green, master instructor and MTeach Program Coordinator at Middle Tennessee State University, emphasized the increasing importance of hands-on learning in modern education... This emphasis on experiential learning is why MTeach places a strong focus on STEM education and implements a 5 “E” lesson plan for future students... STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

The MTeach program at MTSU is specifically designed to address the need for more qualified mathematics, science, and agriculture teachers across the state and the nation. Beginning with early field experiences for students, MTeach offers subject-specific coursework approaches that aim to build strong disciplinary foundations. Originally developed by the University of Texas at Austin, this program equips educators with the tools to create effective teaching and learning environments for all students.

Many participants in the MTeach program already hold degrees in mathematics, computer science, or other science-related fields, bringing diverse perspectives and expertise to the classroom.

Summercamp: In an effort to further engage high school students and foster their interest in STEM subjects, the College of Basic and Applied Sciences at MTSU is offering a one-week summer STEM camp (STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

This camp, tailored for students entering the 10th through 12th grades for the 2024-25 academic year, will provide hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Scheduled to run from July 15th to 19th, the in-person camp will offer a variety of activities each day, with a limit of 15 students per activity on a first-come, first-served basis. Some of the activities will include engaging concrete lab experiments, drone activities, and captivating planetarium experiences.

As the demand for STEM education continues to grow, initiatives like MTeach and the summer STEM camp at MTSU play a crucial role in inspiring and preparing the next generation of innovators and problem solvers, while also helping the educators of today and the future.
