MURFREESBORO, TN - In the License Plate Reader files of the Murfreesboro Police Department, we present another story in the ongoing quest to apprehend suspected criminals. In today’s edition, an LPR camera spotted a passing car linked to mischief; otherwise, this story wouldn’t be particularly interesting. For this case, we head to Lowe’s home improvement store.
This past Friday, a license plate reader identified a vehicle mentioned in a police report filed at Lowe’s, which highlighted a theft case. Authorities say the alert reached the Real Time Crime Center at MPD Headquarters, followed by a notification sent to an officer on the street near the vehicle.
Within seconds of receiving the alert, the officer pulled in behind the suspect vehicle and activated their emergency equipment. However, more than just a siren was needed to pull the driver over.
After officers stopped the car, the driver was identified as Terrance Smotherman. The suspect allegedly resisted arrest and attempted to flee from law enforcement. When subdued, he was handcuffed and taken to the local jail, conveniently located just around the corner from where it all began at Lowe’s.
Meanwhile, at the scene of the suspect’s vehicle, police discovered a cache of stolen goods, including power tools taken from Lowe’s. The tools were valued at more than $700, leading to charges of theft under $1,000 against Smotherman. He is also facing charges for possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, and escape.
