Family members, friends and fishermen want justice for whoever killed Gregg Hawkins after he fished Oct. 16 at Mona Boat Ramp.

They are raising funds for a reward they hope will lead to an arrest and prosecution of who fatally shot Hawkins.

Hawkins' daughter, Brandi, said members of the Kayak Anglers for a Cause offered to sponsor a fishing tournament Saturday (11/7/15) to raise funds. Murfreesboro Outdoors is partnering with the Kayak Anglers to raise fund through a raffle and BBQ lunch after the tournament. Hawkins' wife, Janet, and daughters Brandi and Logan LaRese and some of Janet's friends are collecting services, products and gift certificates for a silent auction during the lunch, including a one-year membership to On Target, a $300 value.

"We're at peace with where he is but we're not at peace with how he got there," Brandi Hawkins said. "We don't want this to happen to anyone else. Whoever is responsible is still out there."

Lt. Todd Sparks said Rutherford County Sheriff's detectives are hoping to raise significant funds to offer as a reward for information that would lead to an arrest and conviction in this case.

"We would like to think that if someone has information that they would do the right thing and come forward anyway but that doesn't always happen," Lt. Sparks said. "So, the funds provide an opportunity for someone that may have information that would lead to an arrest and conviction to come forward and know that they have done the right thing and be rewarded for it.

"Gregg Hawkins touched many lives and those lives are anxious to get some answers," Lt. Sparks said. "We are too. We know that someone out there has the information we are looking for. We are hopeful that the reward funds may encourage them to come forward so that the family of Gregg Hawkins can begin the healing process. That's a tough process, especially when you don't have any answers."

Owner Randy Bolin of Murfreesboro Outdoors said Hawkins was a regular customer, one of a brotherhood of fishermen. When asked to participating in the fund-raiser, he agreed.

"We're trying to find out who did this and take care of the family," Bolin said. "It's just horrible that something like that happened."

Bolin believes someone driving on Jefferson Pike about 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16 may have seen a driver speeding out of the boat ramp area and give that information to Sheriff's detectives at 615-898-7916.

To raise funds, Murfreesboro Outdoors at 2204 N.W. Broad St. in Murfreesboro is raffling a $300 rod and reel combo, a tackle box of lures donated by Reel Baits and a brick of .22 shells. Tickets are $5 each or three for $10. People may buy raffle items through Saturday's BBQ. Winners do not have to be present. For more information, call Murfreesboro Outdoors at 615-896-4745.

Bass boat and kayakers are welcome for the bass fishing tournament Saturday on any public water on Percy Priest Lake and Stones River. Registration for the tournament online is at www.chattanoogabassyakkers.com. Cost is $40.

Hawkins' murder affected other fishermen who are more cautious about fishing, especially alone.

"You shouldn't have to carry a gun to go fishing," Bolin said.
