Backpacks and school supplies for students in kindergarten through 12th grade will be distributed free this Thursday starting at 9 a.m. at The Salvation Army Center of Hope, 1137 W. Main St., in Murfreesboro. The backpack and school supply giveaway will continue “until all the backpacks are gone,” a representative with the local corps said. About 400 children are expected to receive backpacks. Separate K through fifth-grade and grades 6-12 backpacks with school supplies will be available for low-income families on a first-come-first-serve basis. The Salvation Army’s local corps is located just off New Salem Highway (state route 99), one block from Old Fort Parkway. Community services offered by The Salvation Army include emergency food and shelter; various social services and referrals; holiday assistance programs, summer camp and emergency-disaster services. The Salvation Army, a partner agency with the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon counties, is a first-year member of the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce.
