(MURFREESBORO) The old bank with a coin shop on the rear are being auctioned off at 1:00 o'clock this coming Thursday afternoon. For more information, contact County Deputy to the Mayor Steve Sandlin at 615-849-4851.

The auction will be "on site" and the first up is the old Murfreesboro Bank & Trust building at 22 North Public Square. The second parcel is the back of that structure. Many remember it as the coin store at 124 North Maple Street.

Bank Property

In the 1920's, the Murfreesboro Bank and Trust Company built the bank on the north side of the public square. The building was later rebuilt in the 1950's. As Rutherford County grew.

When the bank closed, the county took over the property. Now that the new Rutherford County Judicial Center is completed, the office space in the old bank building is no longer needed.

On a WGNS' broadcast County Mayor Bill Ketron noted . . .

The bank building has approximately 13,800 square feet of space, and the coin shop is around 5,040 square feet.

Coin Building

The rear of the structure contains approximately 5, 376 square feet of space. The official address of this complex is 124 N. Maple Street.

This 1887 structure has been the site of Murfreesboro Battery Service Station. The auto service drive-through to the pumps and other auto service can be seen with three enclosed sections facing College Street.

Those vehicle bays were filled-in with a brick wall when the Coin Shop opened.

Rutherford County government purchased the entire structure in the early 1980s.

In recent years, several potential investors spoke with county leaders about purchasing the property and placing a restaurant in the building with a roof bar, others wanted to raze the structure and put retail on the ground floor with residential space above, and some wanted to create small office suites.

Obviously, those dreams soured and the county is moving forward by putting the structure on the auction block. Whatever it brings, Rutherford County will benefit. As it currently stands, since the property is county owned--it brings in zero property tax dollars. Whoever is the high bidder will be the lucky dude to put the complex back on the property tax rolls.

Both structures are zoned in the Central Business District (CBD). For more information about zoning, contact the City of Murfreesboro Planning Department for CBD uses by emailing planning@murfreesborotn.gov or by calling 615-893-6441.
