In addition to the Murfreesboro Police Department handing out Kroger gift cards in exchange for guns and taking prescription drugs no longer being used on Saturday, MTSU will be participating in a similar event today (minus the gun take back program). Murfreesboro Police will be at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital on Saturday between 8am and 12noon “taking back” guns and prescription drugs. MTSU Public Safety will be set up TODAY (Friday) taking back prescription drugs no longer being used.

On the MTSU campus from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. TODAY (Friday, Oct. 25), you can drop off unwanted prescription drugs at the Student Health, Wellness and Recreation Center on the east side of campus. The drop off will be at the drive-up location next to the Campus Pharmacy drive-thru.

More News About MTSU Prescription Drug Take Back:

The first MTSU Prescription Drug Take-Back Day was so successful that Campus Pharmacy, Public Safety and Health Promotion organizers immediately began planning for the second one.

Open to both the general public and campus community, it will take place from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at the Student Health, Wellness and Recreation Center on the east side of campus. The drop off will be at the drive-up location next to the Campus Pharmacy drive-thru.

To prepare for the collection, organizers request that you please keep medications in their original packaging when possible, and black out any personally identifying information on the labels.

This event allows the MTSU community and general public the opportunity to dispose of expired or unneeded prescriptions and over-the-counter medications responsibly, said Lisa Schrader, director of MTSU Health Promotion. A little more than 29 pounds was collected in the April take-back event.

Schrader added that events like these help prevent inappropriate and illicit use of medications as well as environmental damage that could occur if medicines are flushed into the water supply.

“October is Medicine Abuse Awareness Month, and the campus drug take-back event gives the MTSU community an opportunity to get medicines they no longer need out of their homes and out of danger of being misused.

“We were really pleased with the success of the previous drug take-back event in April, and we hope that this fall’s event can be even bigger.”
