The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD) has hired four new elevator inspectors, including the first female elevator inspector in the state's history.
The new hires include Steve Millsaps, who will be based in Murfreesboro, Rodney Gentry, who will inspect elevators in the Nashville area, William Brooks will be in Knoxville and Laralyn Drew, the state's first female inspector, will work in Nashville.
"With the large growth in Nashville and numerous ongoing construction projects on the rise, getting qualified inspectors hired is a premium to ensure public safety," said division Administrator Kim Jefferson.
The four new inspectors are currently undergoing training at different locations in the Nashville area. They are learning what safety criteria the state requires elevator operators to maintain and what to look for during on-site inspections.
"Each inspector will receive training during their first year, and they will obtain national certification through the Qualified Elevator Inspector program," said Jefferson.
