A day after being charged with misdemeanor theft, County Commissioner Joe Frank Jernigan retires from the county highway department. Road Superintendent Greg Brooks says Jernigan retired Thursday morning from his county position.

The 69-year old Jernigan was allegedly caught on camera stealing his opponent's political advertising signs. To further complicate the issue, the family on whose property the sign was located, claims that Jernigan was driving a vehicle with Rutherford County government license tags.

Jernigan was booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a criminal summons that was taken out by opponent Matt Harvey, as noted on the criminal summons. Harvey is running against Jernigan in District 6.
