Both the Murfreesboro Police Department and Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue have been cyber-attacked with a computer malware called "WannaCry."

The MPD told WGNS that they are investigating to determine who introduced the malware to their system.

The I-T Department became aware of the attack on Saturday (July 1, 2017) and took the entire system off line. On Wednesday (7/6/17), the police department confirmed that 19 computers and two file servers that were breached were taken off the network and are in the possession of the information technology department. Most of the data that was on the computers is not retrievable due to the malware attack.

The "WannaCry" cyber-attack is worldwide and began on May 12, 2017. Whoever is behind the attack demands ransom payments in the form of BitCoin currency, which can be untraceable in many cases.

The same malware has infected computers and operating systems belonging to FedEx, United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) and more.

On Thursday afternoon MPD Chief Karl Durr confirmed, "I-T is continuing to evaluate and assess our infrastructure to ensure that we have contained any potential for a further spread and working to bring the servers back online. We have been in contact with the FBI and cooperating with them for any potential investigation. We want to make sure our community is aware that our communications center is receiving emergency and non-emergency calls for police and fire rescue and calls for service have not been interrupted since the ransomware attack on July 1st." As always, Murfreesboro Fire and Police are committed to the safety of our community."
