Deputies and detectives responding to a possible heroin overdose call discovered illegal drugs and six people living in squalid conditions Tuesday at 103 Fall Creek Drive, a sheriff's narcotics supervisor said.

One person at the home was taken to St. Thomas Rutherford for a possible heroin overdose while eight people inside the house were charged with possession of methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and marijuana while seven of the eight were charged with maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of selling narcotics, said Narcotics Lt. Jason Mathis.

Sheriff's officers have responded to the home 84 times since 2010 and twice this year for possible heroin overdoses, he said.

While searching the house, detectives recovered the heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana, Mathis said.

Squalid living conditions inside the home prompted the detectives to notify the Rutherford County Building Codes who posted a warning on the door staying no one can enter the unsafe house due to "substandard living conditions" with no water, electricity and smoke detectors. The notice stated, "not fit for human habitation."

Mathis obtained a subpoena showing the electricity was turned off Feb. 21. There was no running water with human waste overflowing in the toilets and bathrooms.

All of the residents were told not to re-enter the home.

"This is a prime example of what drugs are doing to our community," Mathis said. "We believe this house is maintained to use or consume narcotics rather than a dwelling."
