Region Basketball Semifinals Ahead for 10 Rutherford County Prep Teams

Feb 26, 2018 at 07:03 am by bryan

Ten of Rutherford County's 11 region prep basketball teams survived elimination over the weekend to advance to this week's semifinals, a win away from the state's Sweet 16, a region championship game and a sectional berth.

In girls, last Friday, Blackman, Stewarts Creek, Riverdale and Oakland swept District 8AAA in the first round. Eagleville girls also defeated Merrol Hyde to advance.

In boys, on Saturday, Blackman, Riverdale, Oakland and La Vergne also swept their District 8AAA competition in the first round. Central Magnet defeated Waverly at home to make it to the region semis Tuesday while Eagleville lost a controversial overtime game at LEAD Academy.

With the local teams sweeping the first round of the Region 4AAA tournament, all four days of semifinal and championship competition will be played at Oakland instead of Columbia.

Monday night, Blackman will play Stewarts Creek at 6pm with Riverdale battling Oakland at 7:30pm. Both games will be on the radio and streaming during State Farm Prep coverage. Also, Eagleville girls battle district foe Moore County at 7:30pm in the Region 4A semis, played at Eagleville.

On Tuesday, it's boys semifinals. Riverdale will battle La Vergne at 6pm with Blackman taking on Oakland at 7:45pm. Coverage on State Farm Prep sports will begin on streaming and our phone apps until the conclusion of the MTSU - UT baseball game. We will transition to the radio as well for the remainder of the broadcast. Also, Central Magnet will travel to Nolensville High School to take on Marshall County in the Region 6AA semifinals at 7:30pm.

Winners of Monday and Tuesday games will advance to the championship game and will ensure their team an appearance in the sectional, or what many longtime fans may still call the substate.
