Here's more on the story that you heard about Friday morning on WGNS. Arson is suspected in three Rutherford County structure fires early Friday morning (7/12/2013). In fact, it appears that someone was igniting the blazes while the firefighters were extinguishing flames nearby.
WGNS News has learned that local firefighters were called to three blazes. The fires damaged two unoccupied residences and one barn at 3016 Factory Road off Halls Hill Pike. The fires were within a hundred yards of each other with open fields between them.
Rutherford County Fire and Rescue was the first on-the-scene at shortly after midnight in the early morning hours. While they were knocking-down the flames at an abandoned mobile home, they looked across a field and saw fire at another structure. After an hour fighting the blaze at the second abandoned home, a third fire in an out building was noticed. At the third site, newspapers were found stuffed in the door and ignited. Firefighters quickly extinguished that fire.
In addition to Rutherford, volunteer firefighters from Kittrell, Lascassas, Fosterville and Walter Hill were at the scene. Approximately 45 persons fought the blazes during the early morning and mid-day periods. One firefighter was overcome by heat, but was treated at the scene.
