Murfreesboro Council Approves Annexation of Middle Point Landfill

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) — On Thursday night (July 17), the Murfreesboro City Council unanimously approved the annexation of the Middle Point Landfill into the city limits. The 6-0 vote marks a significant step in the city’s efforts to extend regulatory oversight to the landfill site, which has been the focus of ongoing community concerns.

As residential and commercial development has expanded around Middle Point, homes and businesses now sit less than half a mile from landfill operations. Several city-operated parks and recreational areas are also located just across the river from the facility.

With annexation approved, the landfill is now subject to Murfreesboro’s municipal codes, including property maintenance, stormwater control, fire safety inspections, and other public safety measures. Any future improvements to the site must comply with local zoning regulations, floodplain standards, and building codes.

The city emphasized that this move does not authorize or support any expansion of the landfill, nor does it give Murfreesboro the authority to shut down operations currently permitted by the State of Tennessee. Instead, the annexation provides the city with tools to ensure the facility adheres to the same standards required of other industrial operations within the city limits.
