40-Year Old Cold Case of Stanley Smith

This is thought to be the senior high photo of the late Stanley Smith. He was found murdered on March 25, 1977.
To help acquaintances who did not know Stanley Smith when he was in school, this picture shows how he looked as he neared that fateful day in 1977.
This is the abandoned structure off Van Cleve Lane in which the lifeless body of 26-year old Stanley Smith was found on March 25, 1977. In fact, you can see a Sheriffs Deputy, Park Ranger and FBI agent combing the area for evidence.
Van Cleve Lane is now closed to motorists. Not long ago, the tree covered narrow roadway connected the Old Nashville Highway to Wilkinson Pike. Back then a local veterinarian’s farm was on one side of the roadway and the Stones River Battlefield was on the other. The abandoned structure In which Stanley Smith’s body was found was also on Van Cleve Lane.

The Cold Case Unit at the Rutherford County Sheriffs Office has teamed with the TBI to open a 40-year old murder case. On March 25, 1977, the body of Stanley Smith was found in an abandoned house off Van Cleve Lane, near the battlefield . . .

He explained that DNA and forensic science have changed dramatically since 1977, and he feels this murder is solvable . . .

Detective Kohler said, "Someone listening may hold the key to solving this case and not even realize it."

Stanley Smith grew-up on Richardson Avenue; that's a block-long street that connects East Vine on one side with East State Street on the other.
