MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - Roadwork will soon trigger significant detours for Murfreesboro drivers. The Tennessee Department of Transportation will close portions of Veterans Parkway in two phases starting next week.

The first phase begins Monday, July 6th. Crews will close the south side of Veterans Parkway in both directions from New Salem Highway to Armstrong Valley Road. Drivers traveling southbound will detour east to St. Andrews Drive, then head south to get back on Veterans Parkway. Northbound drivers will take St. Andrews Drive north to New Salem Highway, then head west to rejoin the parkway. TDOT will install a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of New Salem Highway and Armstrong Valley Road to help handle the traffic flow. This phase wraps up on Friday, July 24th.

The second phase starts immediately after on Friday, July 24th. Workers will close the north side of Veterans Parkway in both directions between New Salem Highway and Old Salem Road. Southbound drivers will detour east at Old Salem Road to New Salem Highway, then travel west to get back onto Veterans Parkway. Crews will set up another temporary signal at New Salem Highway and Old Salem Road for this stretch. This final closure is scheduled to end on Friday, July 31st.

State officials say these closures allow crews to raise and rebuild the intersection of New Salem Highway at Veterans Parkway. The work is part of Phase 3 of the New Salem Highway Widening Project, which started in February 2025. The overall project stretches nearly two and a half miles from west of Veterans Parkway to Cason Lane. The construction transforms the road from a two-lane highway into a five-lane highway. TDOT expects the entire project to finish by December 2027.

All work depends on the weather. State officials remind drivers to slow down, leave early, and watch out for road crews.
