Lunch‑Hour School Bus Crash Draws Concern From Passing Drivers

MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - A small Rutherford County School bus and a Volkswagen Jetta were involved in a midday crash Tuesday (6/30/2026) in the 1000 block of North Highland Avenue, creating a brief wave of concern among drivers who saw the yellow bus surround by police and an ambulance in the middle of the roadway.

The collision happened around 12:30 p.m., right in the heart of the lunch‑hour. With cars steadily flowing in both directions, Murfreesboro Police officers worked quickly to keep vehicles moving while paramedics checked on those involved.

Rutherford County Schools Chief Communications Officer James Evans told NewsRadio WGNS that no students were on the bus at the time, and the driver was not injured. That reassurance helped calm some of the worry from motorists who slowed down, hoping the situation wasn’t as serious as it looked.

Emergency Medical Services responded after one driver reported shoulder pain, but after evaluation, no one was transported to the hospital. The scene remained active for a short time as officers directed traffic around the vehicles and gathered information from those involved. Any incident involving a school bus tends to draw immediate attention, and this one was no exception.

Murfreesboro Police PIO Larry Flowers told WGNS News the crash remains under investigation, and officers will determine exactly what led to the midday collision.

For many in the community, it was a reminder of how quickly a routine drive can turn into an unexpected moment of worry — especially when a school bus is part of the picture.
