MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Traffic backed up on South Church Street Wednesday afternoon after a bicyclist and an SUV were involved in a crash near the intersection of South Church Street and Innsbrooke Drive, across from the Kroger shopping area.

Murfreesboro Police, along with Murfreesboro Fire Rescue crews, arrived quickly and began assisting the injured bicyclist. Emergency personnel treated the rider at the scene before he was transported to a hospital for additional care. His condition has not been released. WSMV also reported that drivers were warned to expect delays on South Church Street after the SUV and bicycle collision.

According to Murfreesboro Police, the preliminary investigation indicates the bicyclist failed to yield the right of way. However, police emphasized that the crash remains under investigation by the MPD Traffic Unit.

Less than an hour later, emergency crews were called to another crash only a few miles away on Highway 99, also known as New Salem Highway. That wreck involved three vehicles and occurred near the intersection of New Salem Highway and Weston Boulevard. During the 5 o’clock hour, all inbound lanes had to be closed while Murfreesboro police and fire personnel worked the scene.

The back-to-back crashes added to an already busy stretch for Murfreesboro first responders. During the month of June, the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department responded to 2,048 calls for service, including EMS calls, rescue incidents and 28 working fires. The department said call volume increased from the previous month, keeping firefighters, paramedics and support personnel moving around the clock.

As Murfreesboro continues to grow, crashes along heavily traveled corridors such as South Church Street and New Salem Highway remain a regular concern for drivers, cyclists and emergency responders. Police continue to urge motorists to slow down, stay alert and use caution near intersections, especially during afternoon traffic.
