MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - The Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department is urging residents to enjoy their America 250 Independence Day celebrations safely — not just while lighting fireworks, but afterward, when many fires actually begin.
Fire Marshal Brian Lowe says, "The danger often comes after the excitement is over. Many fireworks‑related fires happen after the celebration is over when they are thrown into the trash before they are completely extinguished. We’ve responded to fires caused by improperly discarded fireworks. Taking a few extra minutes to cool, soak, and properly dispose of used fireworks can help protect homes, businesses, and lives.”
Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department’s Fire Marshal’s Office is encouraging residents to follow the department’s “Soak & Separate” rule. First, let fireworks cool for at least 15 to 20 minutes after they finish discharging. If a firework fails to ignite, don’t relight it — and don’t lean over it. Give it at least 20 minutes before approaching.
Once everything has cooled, place all spent fireworks and duds in a bucket of water for several hours or overnight. After they’re fully soaked, bag them and place them in an outdoor trash container. Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department stresses that fireworks should never be placed in a trash can inside a home, garage, or attached structure.
And don’t forget sparklers. They burn hot enough to melt glass and cause many burn injuries each year. Used sparklers should go straight into a bucket of water.
“The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to leave them to the professionals,” Lowe added. He encourages families to attend permitted public displays whenever possible — and to make safety the top priority if using consumer fireworks at home.
To really protect your home — and the people you love — skip backyard fireworks altogether and head to one of the area’s professional pyrotechnic shows. These displays are bigger, safer, and designed to be enjoyed without the risks that come with personal fireworks. Celebrate smart this year visit Smyrna, Murfreesboro, La Vergne, or Nashville.
