MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - A stubborn line of thunderstorms rolled across Rutherford County Friday afternoon and evening, washing out Main Street Murfreesboro’s long‑planned Friday Night Live concert and delaying the public dedication of the new America 250 Mural Mosaic. Lightning flickered across the historic square as rain soaked the greenspace beside Shacklett’s Photography, where the 8‑by‑16‑foot patriotic artwork now hangs.
Main Street Executive Director Sarah Callender spent much of the afternoon watching radar and hoping the skies would clear long enough to unveil the mosaic, a community‑painted tribute marking the nation’s 250th anniversary.
“We were ready,” she said, “but the storms just wouldn’t let up.” The mural, titled The Patriot’s Flag, features 650 hand‑painted tiles created by residents across Rutherford County. Even in the rain, its bright colors stood out against the brick wall of Shacklett’s Photography, facing the greenspace at South Church and East Main Streets.
While Friday night’s celebration was washed away, Saturday promises a full slate of Independence Day traditions downtown. Callender encouraged residents to start their morning at Main Street’s Saturday Marketplace from 8:00 a.m. to noon, where local farmers, bakers, and artisans will fill the courthouse square. Visitors can also stop by the mosaic, now fully installed and ready for viewing despite Friday’s weather setback.
At 9:30 a.m., the Daughters of the American Revolution, Stones River Sons of the American Revolution, and Children of the American Revolution will host a free community celebration on the east side of the Historic Rutherford County Courthouse. The event includes patriotic music, a living‑history presentation, and tours of the courthouse museum. That's not all--the DAR will offer a special skit performed by a four‑woman. The morning also includes fascinating information about the Declaration of Independence that will connect us with America’s founding story. In addition, children can join a scavenger hunt. Plus, there will be 1,000 cupcakes served to mark the nation’s semi‑quincentennial.
Main Street Murfreesboro, now in its 40th year, continues its mission to preserve and promote the historic downtown district — even when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Though storms forced Friday Night Live and the mosaic dedication to be canceled, the spirit of community celebration remains firmly in place for Saturday’s Independence Day festivities.
