MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - Murfreesboro’s big America 250 weekend didn’t get the kickoff Main Street hoped for. Strong storms barreled across the city Friday afternoon and evening, complete with lightning that rattled windows and sent event crews scrambling. By early evening, both the dedication of the America 250 mosaic on the historic square and the Friday Night Live concert were officially canceled.
Main Street Executive Director Sarah Callender said the mosaic dedication will be rescheduled. “We’ll have to set a new date,” she noted. As soon as that’s determined, you’ll hear about it on WGNS.
The mosaic itself — The Patriot’s Flag — is already in place and drawing plenty of attention. The 8-by-16‑foot mural on the side of Shacklett’s Photography at 105 S. Church Street is made up of 650 hand‑painted tiles created by residents across Rutherford County. In the dawn's early light on the Fourth of July, a steady stream of locals and tourists showed-up eager to see the new landmark.
From a distance, the mural reads as a bold, all‑American flag. Up close, it becomes a time capsule of national history and pop culture. Tiles depict the Declaration of Independence, the Liberty Bell, the moon landing, past presidents, Marilyn Monroe, the White House, the Statue of Liberty, Elvis, and even King Kong perched on the Empire State Building. It’s playful, patriotic, and unmistakably community‑made.
The USA 250 Mural Project is a partnership between Main Street Murfreesboro, Rutherford County Government, and Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation. Through MuralMosaic, residents were invited to paint tiles at workshops throughout May and June — turning the nation’s 250th anniversary into something hands‑on and lasting. The result is a collective masterpiece that lets anyone “leave their mark” on history.
And while Friday’s storms may have washed out the celebration, the mural is now part of downtown for good — ready for its official dedication once the weather cooperates.
