MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - Summertime in Rutherford County always feels like an invitation to slow down, grab a good book, and let curiosity take the lead. Read To Succeed is leaning into that spirit, reminding families that reading isn’t just a pastime — it’s a pathway to opportunity.

Executive Director Jolene Radnoti says this year’s America 250 celebration offers the perfect moment to reflect on how literacy has shaped the country. “As we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary this month, we're reminded that America's story has always been written by people who could dream, learn, and share their voices.”

From the founding documents to today’s classrooms and workplaces, literacy has fueled freedom and progress. But even with the milestone celebration, Radnoti says the work isn’t finished. Many children and adults in Rutherford County still struggle with reading and communication skills, challenges that can limit education, employment, and everyday confidence. When families strengthen literacy, she added, the impact ripples forward — children become stronger readers, parents feel more equipped to support learning at home, and adults unlock new opportunities.

Radnoti said, “At Read To Succeed, we believe every person deserves the chance to write their own success story. Thanks to volunteers, donors, and community partners, Read To Succeed continues offering free programs that support learners of all ages."

One of the highlights of the summer was the Juneteenth Festival, where RTS spent the day with dozens of families. Staff and volunteers handed out nearly 150 books to help build home libraries and hosted their popular “Wheel of Fortune” literacy game for kids. Radnoti expressed gratitude to the City of Murfreesboro, Cultural Arts Murfreesboro, and the Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center for welcoming RTS into the celebration.

As America marks 250 years, Radnoti hopes the community will look ahead with purpose. “Together, we can build a future where every member of our community has the literacy skills needed to thrive,” she said. “Thank you for being part of this important mission and for helping us turn the next chapter into one filled with hope, opportunity, and lifelong learning.”
