MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - If you were anywhere near W. Northfield Boulevard around lunchtime Tuesday (7/7/2026), you probably noticed the unusual quiet on a road that’s normally buzzing with midday traffic. All four lanes were shut down for close to two hours after a construction mishap sent ATMOS Energy and Murfreesboro Fire Rescue scrambling to the scene.
A clerk at Minuteman Press told WGNS NewsRadio that crews had been working in the public access area beside the sidewalk for several days. He said a backhoe was in use Tuesday morning, and then everything changed in an instant.
According to Murfreesboro Fire Rescue PIO Larry Flowers, "A 911 caller reported at 10:58AM that they could smell and hear gas escaping from a ruptured line. ATMOS Energy was immediately dispatched and later confirmed that a two‑inch gas line had been hit."
Fire crews responded to 220 W. Northfield Blvd. and positioned a long ladder truck across the entire roadway, shutting down both directions between Middle Tennessee Christian School Road and Heritage Park Drive. Murfreesboro Police handled traffic control, diverting drivers away from the area while firefighters staged a few hundred feet from the repair site.
The Minuteman Press owner described the scene as a sudden flurry of activity — one moment routine construction, the next a full‑scale emergency response with crews working feverishly to get the line secured. ATMOS officials monitored the repair work for about two hours, evaluating the situation as workers dug, patched, and checked for lingering hazards.
At 1:18PM, ATMOS gave the all‑clear, and every lane of Northfield Boulevard reopened to traffic. What started as a lunchtime surprise ended with a smooth return to normal, thanks to quick teamwork between ATMOS Energy, Murfreesboro Fire Rescue, and Murfreesboro Police.
