SMYRNA, TN - Fireworks may be a seasonal favorite around New Year’s Eve and the Fourth of July, but Smyrna Police say another activity showed up near the holiday rush as well: shoplifting.
Authorities are asking for the public’s help identifying three people pictured in surveillance images connected to two separate theft reports at a fireworks tent in Smyrna, according to police. The tent was set up in the parking lot of a Kroger store, where customers were stopping by ahead of Independence Day celebrations.
According to information released about the cases, one theft was reported on June 25, while a second incident was reported on June 28. Both happened during the busy days leading up to the Fourth of July, when fireworks sales often increase across Middle Tennessee.
Police have not said exactly what was taken or the total value of the items allegedly stolen. However, investigators believe the people shown in the surveillance photos may have information connected to the reported thefts. In the photos you'll see both the original pictures and the computer enhanced photos (larger images).
While fireworks tents have become a familiar sight before major holidays, Smyrna Police are making it clear that walking away with merchandise without paying is not part of the celebration. It is also probably not the type of patriotic tradition the nation’s founders had in mind, even if they might have been surprised to see parking lot tents selling a wide selection of consumer fireworks more than two centuries later.
Anyone who recognizes the individuals pictured or has information about the reported thefts is asked to contact Smyrna Detective Steve Martin at 615-267-5432. Tips can also be emailed to steve.martin@townofsmyrna.org.
