MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - United Way of South Central Tennessee is celebrating a milestone this summer — 15 years of Stuff the Bus, the back‑to‑school effort that’s become one of the most recognizable traditions in Rutherford County and its neighboring communities. Donations are being accepted through July 27, giving residents across Bedford, Cannon, Coffee, Lincoln, Moore, Rutherford, and Warren counties plenty of time to pitch in.
Since launching in 2012, Stuff the Bus has helped more than 50,000 local students walk into their classrooms with confidence instead of worry. United Way partners directly with 10 school systems across its seven‑county region to make sure supplies land in the hands of students who need them most — from early learners just starting out to older students preparing for another busy year.
The drive has a simple mission: make sure every child begins school prepared. That means backpacks filled with crayons, pencils, glue sticks, rulers, folders, notebooks, and all the basics that can make the difference between a stressful first day and an exciting one. For many families, especially during an expensive back‑to‑school season, these supplies are a lifeline.
Community members can help in several ways — donating supplies at public drop‑off sites, volunteering during sorting days, shopping the Amazon Wishlist, or making a financial contribution. Items purchased online can be shipped straight to the United Way office, and local collection sites are scattered throughout the region for easy drop‑offs.
United Way leaders say the impact goes far beyond paper and pencils. Prepared students are more confident, teachers face fewer hurdles, and families under financial strain get a little breathing room. In Rutherford County alone, thousands of backpacks are distributed each year to Murfreesboro City Schools, Rutherford County Schools, and Cannon County Schools.
Stuff the Bus has grown into a true community effort, supported by local sponsors, civic groups, churches, and businesses. It’s neighbors helping neighbors — and a reminder that when the community shows up, students start the school year with dignity, confidence, and the tools they need to succeed.
