Emergency Blood Shortage Hits Home...Red Cross Pleads for Donors Now!

MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - Murfreesboro’s Heart of Tennessee Chapter of the American Red Cross is sounding the alarm. A steep drop in blood donations since late May has pushed the nation into an emergency blood shortage, and local leaders say the situation is serious enough that patient care could be affected if the trend doesn’t reverse quickly.

The Murfreesboro Chapter’s Executive Director John Mitchell explained that donations of all blood types are urgently needed — blood, platelets, and plasma. He said the most important step anyone can take is simply booking an appointment. As a thank you, all who come to give between July 13–31, 2026, will receive a Fandango Movie Ticket by email (up to $15). Details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/July.

The national blood supply fell nearly 25% in June, and the shortage is hitting hardest for platelets and types O positive and B negative. Red Cross distributions to hospitals are running about 3,500 units higher per week than expected, right as trauma season pushes demand even higher. Add in busy summer schedules and the loss of school blood drives, and you’ve got a perfect storm.

Dr. Courtney Lawrence, medical director for the Red Cross, didn’t mince words, “Without a readily available blood supply, emergency departments, operating rooms, and labor and delivery units simply can’t support patients with urgent needs. Cancer patients, trauma victims, and those undergoing critical surgeries depend on donors showing up.”

There’s also a surprising gap between public perception and reality. A recent Red Cross survey found that fewer than one in five people understood that blood can’t be stockpiled — it has a short shelf life and must be constantly replenished. And only about half of respondents believed it was likely they or someone close to them would ever need blood, even though someone in the U.S. receives a transfusion every two seconds.

To make an appointment, phone (800) RED CROSS (800-733-2767) or visit their website: http://redcross.org.
