Inside the Virtual Dementia Tour: Experiencing the Reality of Alzheimer's

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS Radio) -  For families watching a loved one navigate the confusing and often frightening journey of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, understanding their reality can feel impossible. In an effort to bridge that gap in empathy and provide crucial education, an upcoming community event will offer caregivers a rare, immersive look into the minds of those experiencing cognitive decline.

Alzheimer’s Awareness Community Day is set to take place Friday, August 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Stones River Manor in Murfreesboro. The centerpiece of the event is a Virtual Dementia Tour, a simulation designed to replicate the sensory and cognitive challenges faced by patients... That was Thomas Stevenson, who oversees the Assured Care Center at Stones River Manor.

Stevenson told WGNS the Virtual Dementia Tour is an experience that gives others an opportunity to better understand the profound difficulties caused by neurological changes. He further explained that the debriefing process following the hands-on demonstration allows participants to connect their simulated frustrations with the real-world agitation they often observe in family members.

This local initiative comes at a critical time for public health. According to recent data from the Alzheimer’s Association, nearly 7 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, placing an immense physical and emotional burden on millions of unpaid family caregivers nationwide. Difficulties with communication can also contribute to severe caregiver burnout.

Experts stress that sudden changes in temperament, such as an elderly parent becoming highly agitated or angry over seemingly minor issues, may be symptoms of the disease rather than personal attacks. By participating in educational experiences such as the Virtual Dementia Tour, families can learn to avoid arguing with their loved ones and instead meet them where they are in their cognitive journey.
