MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - A six‑vehicle crash snarled Memorial Boulevard traffic at 5:04PM Tuesday afternoon (8/4/2026). A DUI arrest was made and one person was hospitalized. The incident occurred at the Wendelwood intersection and brought soutbound traffic to a near‑halt, leaving drivers bumper‑to‑bumper and wondering what had suddenly gone wrong ahead of them.
Public Information Officer Larry Flowers told WGNS News, "The crash started when an impaired driver slammed into a line of vehicles stopped at the traffic signal. That person was arrested for DUI."
Crash investigators with Murfreesboro Police worked their way through the tight lanes, examining the damage and reconstructing how the chain‑reaction collision unfolded. At one point, officers had the suspected impaired driver detained, handcuffed, and walking the straight‑line field sobriety test, a familiar step when impairment is suspected.
Murfreesboro Fire Rescue and Rutherford County EMS also responded, maneuvering through the congested lanes to check on occupants and assist police. Despite the mess and the heavy evening traffic, MPD managed to keep one outbound lane open, guiding drivers through the intersection and preventing a full shutdown of Memorial Boulevard.
Investigators are still piecing together the timeline and determining whether additional charges will follow. As Murfreesboro Police release more details, NewsRadio WGNS will keep you informed.
