MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - Former Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) head baseball coach Jim Toman passed away on Monday (August 4th), due to complications from brain cancer at age 64.

Toman took over the Blue Raider baseball program in June of 2018 and coached the team through four seasons from 2019 to 2022. During his final season at MTSU in 2022, he guided the squad to a 29-26 record, marking the program's highest win total since 2015. That campaign included five all-conference player selections and earned the Blue Raiders their second consecutive appearance in the Conference USA tournament. Toman finished his career in Murfreesboro with an overall record of 78-102 before stepping down in August of 2022.

Before arriving in Rutherford County, Toman built a decades-long career in collegiate baseball. He played four seasons as a catcher at North Carolina State from 1981 through 1984. His coaching career featured 11 seasons as associate head coach at South Carolina, where he helped lead the Gamecocks to three College World Series appearances. Toman later served as head coach at Liberty from 2008 to 2016 and spent two seasons as an assistant at the College of Charleston before joining MTSU.
