MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - Weather concerns and strict safety protocols have forced Main Street Murfreesboro to postpone the Friday Night Live concert scheduled for August 7th, 2026, on the Historic Downtown Public Square.

Organizers made the decision at 10:00 a.m. Thursday to cancel the show featuring the band Third Party Thieves. Production crews needed to work all day Friday to build the stage and install sound equipment, but forecasts showed a 40 to 50 percent chance of thunderstorms throughout the afternoon. Lightning protocols require crew members to stop work for one hour every time lightning strikes, creating significant delay risks.

Financial and contractual deadlines also forced an early decision. The stage company begins loading equipment before noon on Thursday, at which point Main Street Murfreesboro becomes financially liable for the costs regardless of later weather cancellations. Contracts also required paying the band in full unless the event was officially canceled and rescheduled before Friday morning.

Equipment placement added extra safety concerns. Current rules from the County Mayor placed the stage on the west side of the courthouse where the road drops steeply. Organizers noted that rainwater runoff from the courthouse could flow directly into electrical cords and gear, creating extreme safety risks for the band and crew. Main Street Murfreesboro hopes to move the stage back to the east side of the courthouse for the makeup date, where the event was held for 20 years, citing better logistics, shade, police monitoring, and crowd visibility.

The organization noted the heavy financial hit from July's concert, which was canceled by sudden pop-up showers after non-refundable funds had already been spent. Main Street Murfreesboro emphasized the need to act responsibly with sponsor dollars and resources provided by the Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD), which supplies significant funding and officers to secure and close the square.

Main Street Murfreesboro is working with the band and the Mayor’s Office to finalize an October makeup date. The next scheduled event in the series remains set for September 25th, 2026, featuring the band MixTape.
