NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WGNS) - Local library patrons across Rutherford County will soon have access to improved digital literacy training following a state funding boost.

Secretary of State Tre Hargett and local state legislators announced a $3,300 Training Opportunities for the Public (TOP) Grant award for the Rutherford County Library System. The funding will directly cover the cost of local digital literacy instruction. TOP Grants are funded by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development and administered by the Secretary of State’s office.

State officials noted that public libraries serve as vital resources for building strong local communities. In fast-growing Rutherford County, library facilities provide educational programming, technology access, and workforce development services that benefit residents of all ages.

State lawmakers representing Murfreesboro and Smyrna emphasized that digital skills are essential for daily life. State Reps. Bryan Terry, Tim Rudd, and Charlie Baum of Murfreesboro, along with State Reps. Mike Sparks and Robert Stevens of Smyrna, stated that the grant will expand training programs to help more residents confidently use technology. Sen. Shane Reeves added that the grant expands digital literacy opportunities, strengthens technology resources, and connects patrons with the tools they need for lifelong learning and job development.

Public libraries across Tennessee use TOP Grant funds to meet specific local needs. Approved grant resources across the state can include digital literacy classes, Wi-Fi hotspots, solar charging stations, and enhanced internet connectivity and access at each library location.

This year, state officials are awarding $296,626 in TOP Grant funding to increase technology access across 49 public libraries in Tennessee, with individual awards reaching up to $20,000.
