RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WGNS News) - Across the country, Americans are feeling more pain at the pump as gas prices move higher again. Overnight, the nationwide average price for regular unleaded climbed from $4.03 per gallon Wednesday evening to $4.07 per gallon Thursday night, according to AAA, the Auto Club.

Indiana held the No. 1 spot Wednesday as the state with the cheapest gasoline, but Louisiana took over that ranking by Thursday. Louisiana currently has the lowest average price for 87-octane gasoline at $3.57 per gallon. Tennessee also remains among the more affordable states, ranking No. 7 among the 20 states with the cheapest gasoline. The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Tennessee is $3.65.

Looking across Tennessee’s 95 counties, Rutherford County had some of the lowest prices in the state, but the keyword is “had.” Overnight, the average price of 87-octane gasoline jumped from $3.46 per gallon to $3.69 in the Murfreesboro, Smyrna and La Vergne area. About 20 minutes south of Murfreesboro, drivers in Bedford County are paying approximately 4 cents more, with prices averaging $3.73 per gallon. To the north, Wilson County motorists are paying about 7 cents less than those in Rutherford County.

Bledsoe County has the highest-priced gasoline in the state, with drivers in the East Tennessee community paying an average of $4 per gallon. Meanwhile, in neighboring Nashville, the average price of regular unleaded is $3.73 per gallon.

The highest gasoline prices in the nation can currently be found on the West Coast, where California drivers are paying an average of $5.58 per gallon for regular-grade fuel.

Diesel prices have also increased nationwide over the past 30 days. What previously averaged $4.87 per gallon is now averaging $5.40 per gallon across the country. Tennessee ranks No. 11 among the 20 states with the cheapest diesel prices as of Thursday night. According to AAA, Tennesseans are paying an average of $5.04 per gallon for diesel.

Oklahoma currently holds the No. 1 spot for the cheapest diesel prices, where drivers are paying an average of $4.90 per gallon. Hawaii has the highest diesel prices in the nation at $7.01 per gallon, followed closely by California at $6.89 per gallon.
