The wildly popular “Hello Dolly” musical will be performed at the Center for the Arts three weekends starting at 7:30 this coming Friday night (7/13/2013).
The Jerry Hermann musical opened on Broadway in 1964 starring Carol Channing. It tied a record by winning 10 Tony awards and ran for 2,844 performances, making it the longest-running musical in Broadway history at the time.
In 1969 a film version starring Barbra Streisand won three Academy Awards. The show has been revised several times on Broadway, and has been a community theater favorite for decades.
“Hello Dolly” is a lushly costumed and light-hearted musical set at the turn of the 19th Century into the 20th. It centers on the story of a brassy widow who makes a living with what she calls "meddling" – matchmaking and scores of sidelines. Though supposedly seeking a wife for a grumpy “half-millionaire”, Dolly conspires to marry him herself.
The show will be performed at 7:30 p.m. July 12, 13, 19, 20, and 26, 27 and at 2 p.m. on July 14, 21 and 28. Tickets range from $11 to $15. For reservations or more information, call 615 904-2787 or go online at www.boroarts.org.
