BOSTON, MA (WGNS) - A Murfreesboro man who spent three years on the run is now in custody after U.S. Marshals tracked him down in Boston on Friday. Authorities say 39‑year‑old Irving Marlon Sarmiento left Tennessee in 2023 to avoid prosecution in a child sexual abuse investigation, prompting a nationwide search that stretched across multiple states and agencies.
Detectives with the Murfreesboro Police Department’s Special Victims Unit began investigating allegations of child sexual abuse in May of 2023. During that investigation, Sarmiento was identified as a suspect. A Rutherford County Grand Jury later indicted him on one count of rape of a child in September of that year. Before the indictment could be served, investigators say Sarmiento left Murfreesboro, disappearing from the area and triggering a long‑term fugitive search.
That search ended this week when U.S. Marshals located him in Boston. Details about how they tracked him down have not yet been released, but officials say the arrest closes a lengthy chapter in the case. Sarmiento is now being extradited back to Rutherford County, where he will face a $125,000 bond once he arrives.
Authorities emphasize that the legal process is just beginning. An indictment is a formal charge, not a finding of guilt, and Sarmiento is presumed innocent unless proven otherwise in court. Any determination of guilt or innocence can only come through judicial proceedings based on evidence presented before a judge or jury.
More information is expected once Sarmiento is returned to Tennessee and appears before the court.
