MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - Plans are already underway for the 2027 International Folkfest, and organizers say next year’s celebration will run June 6–13. As always, the week will be filled with performances across Rutherford County, with international musicians and dancers visiting schools, senior groups, youth organizations, and civic clubs. It’s one of Murfreesboro’s longest‑running cultural traditions, and one that depends heavily on community support.
This year, Folkfest expects to host around 80 international guests. That means providing lodging, meals, and transportation throughout Tennessee—no small task. Festival founder Steve Cates says the community’s generosity is what keeps the event alive. “Only through the support of our community—both financial and otherwise—can we succeed one more year,” he noted. It costs about $27,000 to produce International Folkfest, and fundraising is already underway as the festival celebrates its 45th year.
Cates added that there’s a place for everyone to help make this cultural exchange possible. One of the most direct ways is through the “Sponsor a Dancer” program. A contribution of $120 covers housing for one dancer or musician for seven days at MTSU. “Can you help?” Cates asks. “If so, get in touch!”
International Folkfest began in 1982 in Murfreesboro, born from the Cripple Creek Cloggers’ international travels and their desire to bring global cultural exchange home to the “Heart of Tennessee.” Cates often reminds supporters that welcoming people from different backgrounds—sometimes those once considered adversaries—helps reveal how much we share. In its early years, the festival traditionally ended with visitors and locals joining hands to sing, “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me…” A fitting message for a festival built on friendship.
In other community news, the annual Kittrell School Reunion is set for Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kittrell Elementary School. Anyone who attended, graduated from, or simply has an interest in Kittrell School is invited. The Fiery Pig will serve lunch, graduating classes will be recognized, and faculty members will be honored.
