La VERGNE, TN (WGNS) - Rutherford County residents will soon have a chance to step inside the world of law enforcement as La Vergne Police Chief Chris Moews opens applications for the department’s Citizen Police Academy. It’s a friendly, come‑see‑how‑we‑do‑things invitation to anyone curious about what really happens behind the scenes at their local police department.

The academy runs for seven weeks and is built to give everyday community members a closer look at the men and women who serve them. It’s not a dry lecture series—participants get a mix of informative presentations and interactive experiences covering everything from uniformed patrol and criminal investigations to special operations, youth and criminal law, and other key areas of the department. The class will meet every Tuesday from Sept. 8 to Oct. 20, 2026. Applicants must be age 18 or old, no prior felony offenses, and no serious misdemeanor charges. A criminal background check will be made on all applicants. 

For those who want an even deeper look, the academy includes an optional ride‑along during weeks four or five. It’s a chance to sit in the passenger seat with a patrol officer and see firsthand how calls unfold, how officers respond, and how quickly situations can change.

Classes meet from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., and each session is capped at 15 participants to keep things personal and engaging. The program is open to all Rutherford County residents, though La Vergne locals get first priority.

Chief Moews says the academy is a great way to meet the officers who serve your community, ask questions, and see policing from a different perspective. It’s designed to build understanding, strengthen relationships, and give residents a clearer picture of how their department works day to day.
